Granada from Marbella: a guide for a day trip in 2026

The Alhambra, the last palace of Moorish Spain, is an hour and a half from the coast. How to get there, what time to leave, what to see, and how much tickets cost.

Granada is perhaps the main destination for a day trip from Marbella. The city is home to the Alhambra, the palace-fortress complex of the Nasrid dynasty, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the last great flowering of Moorish architecture in Europe before the Reconquista of 1492. The complex covers 142,000 square meters on a hill above the city and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Besides the Alhambra, Granada offers the old Moorish quarter of Albaicín, the Sacromonte district of the Roma, a grand cathedral, and a unique tradition of free tapas. This is a full historical city that you can explore in one packed day.

How to get there

By car. About 130 to 180 km depending on the route, with a travel time of 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. The road is good, mostly via a motorway. Marbella’s location in the west of the Costa del Sol makes it one of the convenient starting points for an independent trip to Granada.

Important about parking. If you are driving, book Alhambra parking in advance. The official car park fills up early. Address: Calle Real de la Alhambra. Enter it into your navigation system and follow the signs from the A-395 road. This is much easier than trying to find parking in the historic center.

With an organized tour. Group bus tours from Marbella start from €88 per adult, including hotel pickup, a guided escort, entry tickets to the Alhambra with the palaces and the gardens of the Generalife, a local guide, and an audio headset. Children aged 4 to 11: about €66. Children up to 3 years old: free.

With a private driver and guide. A premium option from €205 per person for a group of 7 people. Includes transfers in a comfortable car, a private Alhambra tour with a licensed guide, and all tickets.

What time to leave

If you are going specifically for the Alhambra, leave early, between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning. Entry to the Nasrid palaces is strictly by the time stated on your ticket, and you cannot be late. An early departure ensures you make it to a morning or daytime slot and you will not feel rushed.

For a comfortable trip, plan about 10 to 11 hours total: roughly 4 hours for the round trip drive, plus 6 to 7 hours to explore the city at a relaxed pace with lunch.

What to see

The Alhambra

The main reason for the trip. The complex consists of four separate areas, and each one requires its own time.

Nasrid palaces. The heart of the Alhambra. The finest carved details, the Courtyard of the Lions, halls with incredibly complex ceilings. Entry is strictly by the time on your ticket.

Alcazaba. The oldest part, a military fortress with towers and a panoramic view of the city.

Generalife. A summer residence with gardens, fountains, and water channels.

Charles V Palace. A Renaissance building with a unique round inner courtyard. Free entry.

Albaicín

An old Moorish quarter with narrow white streets climbing up the hill opposite the Alhambra. From the Mirador de San Nicolás viewpoint, you get the best view of the Alhambra against the backdrop of snow-covered Sierra Nevada. It is especially beautiful at sunset.

Sacromonte

A Roma district known for its cave houses and the tradition of flamenco sambrá. Evening flamenco shows here are considered among the most authentic in Spain.

Cathedral and Royal Chapel

Granada’s cathedral in the Renaissance style and the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella are buried.

Tapas culture

Granada is one of the last cities in Spain where tapa is served for free with every drink you order. Order beer or wine, and they will bring you a free snack. A unique food experience that is worth including in your program.

Ticket prices for 2026

Alhambra, general ticket: €21 per adult. Includes access to the Nasrid palaces, the Alcazaba, and the Generalife.

Official guided tours: €40 to €60. Make sure the Nasrid Palaces are included (Nasrid Palaces), not only the Charles V Palace.

Private tours (2 to 4 people): significantly more expensive.

Important about tickets. Book 2 to 3 weeks in advance during peak season. The number of visitors to the Nasrid palaces is strictly limited, and tickets for popular dates sell out weeks ahead. When you buy, you choose a specific entry time for the Nasrid palaces. Also, for official booking, you must provide the passport details of each visitor.

Practical tips

Leave early, especially if you want the morning slot at the Alhambra.

Book tickets and parking in advance. In peak season, this destination cannot really be visited spontaneously.

Bring your passports. They are needed both for booking tickets and for entry.

Wear comfortable shoes. The complex is large and involves a lot of walking on uneven surfaces.

In summer, come for an early or evening slot. During the day in Granada it is very hot, up to +40°C.

If you still have time after the Alhambra, go up to Albaicín for sunset. It is the best way to end the day.

Best time of year

Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are ideal: comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. In winter, the Alhambra is especially beautiful against the backdrop of snow-covered Sierra Nevada, but days are shorter. In summer it is hot, so plan your visit for the morning and evening.

Main takeaway

Granada is the number one destination for a day trip from Marbella. The Alhambra is one of the most beautiful sites in the world, and it is worth seeing at least once. The main condition for a successful trip is planning: an early departure, tickets to the Nasrid palaces booked in advance, and parking. If you follow these simple rules, Granada will give you one of the strongest impressions you will ever have while living on the coast.
