Quick overview of the route

Ronda from Marbella: a guide for a 1-day trip in 2026

A city at the edge of a 100-meter gorge, Spain’s most famous bridge, and the oldest bullring for bullfighting. Just one hour from the coast. How to get there, what to see, and how much tickets cost.

Ronda is one of the most dramatic cities in Spain and an ideal destination for a day trip thanks to its proximity to Marbella. The city sits at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level and is split by the El Tajo gorge, a 100-meter drop, crossed by Puente Nuevo, an 18th-century stone bridge that took 34 years to build.

This is the route that travelers most often call the most memorable. In real life, the Puente Nuevo bridge is even more impressive than any photo. Standing on the viewpoint with a 100-meter void beneath the arch from the 18th century is a completely different experience than seeing it on a screen.

How to get there

By car. The most convenient option. From Marbella it is about 60 km along the scenic mountain road A-397. The trip takes about 1 hour. The road itself is part of the experience: a winding route through the Serranía de Ronda mountains with views of cork oak forests.

By bus. A direct bus from Marbella to Ronda exists. The trip takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Ronda’s bus station is a 8-minute walk from Puente Nuevo. The downside: without a car, you can’t combine Ronda with the nearby village of Setenil in the same day.

With an organized tour. Tours usually combine Ronda and Setenil de las Bodegas. They last about 9 hours and include entry to the bullring.

What time to leave

This is critical for Ronda. Leave early so you can be at Puente Nuevo by 10:00 at the latest.

The main mistake most tourists make is arriving at 11:00 and immediately going to the bridge. Tourist buses from the coast and cruise ships drop people off between 11:00 and 12:30, and the bridge viewpoints become unsuitable for photos from about 15:30 to 16:00, until the groups move on.

Best time windows for visiting: early morning (before 10:00, when the viewpoints are empty) or late in the day (from 16:30, especially if you stay overnight).

What to see

Puente Nuevo

The main symbol of Ronda and of the whole trip. An 18th-century stone bridge, almost 100 meters high, connecting the old and new parts of the city above the gorge. The view from the bridge is good, but it looks even better from other points in the city, where you can see the scale of the structure.

Mirador de Cuenca and the Cuenca gardens

The best viewpoint over the bridge and the gorge. The Cuenca gardens are arranged as a series of terraces at different heights (23 terraces with roses). From each one, you get a great view of the city, Puente Nuevo, and the El Tajo gorge. Entry to the gardens is free.

Plaza de Toros

One of the oldest bullrings in Spain, opened in 1785. The cradle of modern bullfighting. Here, the legend of Francisco Romero, the inventor of the muleta (the red cape), was born. Today it works mainly as a museum. In 1994, Madonna filmed the Take A Bow music video here.

Casa del Rey Moro (House of the Moorish King)

A historic building with gardens and the famous “Water Mine” (La Mina), a system of underground passages with a staircase descending to the very bottom of the gorge. A unique engineering structure from the Moorish era.

Palacio de Mondragón (Mondragón Palace)

One of the most beautiful palaces in Ronda, with Mudejar courtyards and views of the valley.

Old town (La Ciudad)

A Moorish maze of streets, palaces, churches, and 13th-century Arab baths. The atmosphere of old Andalusia in its pure form.

Wineries

The Ronda region has been known for quality wines since Roman times. Several bodegas near the city offer tastings with local cheese and ham.

Setenil de las Bodegas

If you’re driving, be sure to combine Ronda with this unique village. Setenil is 25 minutes by car from Ronda. It is famous for houses built directly under overhanging rocks. The streets run in the shade of huge stone awnings. One of the most unusual settlements in Spain, where the architecture literally grows out of the rocks. You can see it in about an hour and a half.

Ticket prices for 2026

Plaza de Toros (bullring): about €9 per adult. Includes the bullfighting museum.

Casa del Rey Moro and the Water Mine: €10 per adult, €3 for children under 12. Tickets are sold at the entrance. No advance booking is needed.

Cuenca gardens: free entry.

Mondragón Palace: about €5.

Most attractions in Ronda do not require advance booking. Tickets are sold on site.

Practical tips

Leave early so you can be at the viewpoints before tourist buses arrive at 11:00.

If you’re driving, park in the underground parking garage at Plaza del Socorro, 100 meters from Puente Nuevo.

Have a coffee in the square. The bridge viewpoints are empty until 10:00 and crowded by 11:00.

If you’re driving, be sure to add Setenil. It’s a unique place, 25 minutes away.

Wear comfortable shoes. In Ronda, there is a lot of walking on uneven streets and stairs.

Best time of year

Spring and autumn are ideal: comfortable temperatures and green landscapes. Summer is hot, but it’s easier to handle than in valley cities thanks to the 750-meter altitude. In winter it can be cool and sometimes foggy, but that creates a special atmosphere over the gorge.

Main takeaway

Ronda is one of the best destinations for a day trip from Marbella: just one hour away, dramatic views, rich history, and the chance to combine it with the unique village of Setenil. The main secret to a successful trip is leaving early. If you arrive before 10:00, you’ll see Puente Nuevo and the viewpoints in quiet, before the tourist groups arrive. And the scenic mountain road from Marbella makes the journey itself part of the experience.
