Seville from Marbella: a guide for a 1-day trip in 2026
The capital of Andalusia, the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, and a royal palace that is 700 years old. How to get there, what to see, and how much tickets cost.
Seville is the capital of Andalusia and one of the most atmospheric cities in Spain. Here you can find the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, where Christopher Columbus is buried, the royal palace of the Alcázar, which has been used for more than 700 years, and the neighborhood of orange courtyards and tapas bars, which you can explore for a week.
Seville is farther from Marbella than other destinations, but it is absolutely worth the trip for anyone who wants to see a real Andalusian capital. The main mistake people on the coast make is not in logistics, but in not going at all.
How to get there
By car. About 214 km via the A92 highway through the mountains. The journey takes a little over 2 hours 30 minutes. On the way, you can stop in Ronda, turning the route into a double trip. An alternative southern route via A381 goes past Jerez de la Frontera and takes about 2 hours 45 minutes.
By train. There is no direct train from Marbella (there is no train station in Marbella). You need to get to Málaga first, and then the high-speed AVE train to Seville takes about 2 hours. Tickets start from €15 if booked in advance. This option makes sense if you are ready to first get to Málaga.
With an organized tour. Bus tours with hotel transfers, entry tickets, and a guide cost from €85 per person.
What time to leave
Because of the distance, Seville is right on the edge of a comfortable 1-day trip. Leave early, at 7:00 AM, so you can see both main monuments (the Alcázar and the cathedral) and walk around the old town.
Many people prefer to stay for one night to see the city in the evening and in the morning without rushing. If you decide to stay, the best area to stay overnight is Barrio de Santa Cruz, the most beautiful part of the old town.
What to see
The Cathedral and Giralda
The world’s largest Gothic cathedral. Inside is the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The Giralda Tower, a former minaret of a mosque, rises up to the top along 35 ramps (no steps), from where you can see the whole city.
The Royal Alcázar
The oldest still-functioning royal palace in Europe and a masterpiece of the Mudejar style. Lace-like plasterwork, arches of different shapes, colorful tiles, garden courtyards, halls cooled by fountains, and large formal gardens. The palace has been used as a filming location for «Game of Thrones». Plan 2 to 3 hours to tour the palace and gardens.
Plaza de España
A grand semicircular complex with canals, bridges, and ceramic panels depicting the provinces of Spain. One of the most photographed places in the country. Free entry.
Santa Cruz neighborhood
Former Jewish quarter with a maze of narrow streets, orange trees, and shady courtyards. A great place for a walk and lunch at a traditional bar.
Flamenco
Seville is the birthplace of flamenco. An evening show in a tablao is part of the city’s cultural code. For a 1-day trip, you will have to choose between an early return and a late show.
Food
Local dishes you should try: salmorejo (thick cold tomato soup), espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas), presa ibérica (Iberian pork).
Ticket prices for 2026
Royal Alcázar: a standard ticket is €15.50. Reduced ticket (students from 14 to 30, pensioners) €8. Free for children under 13. Free entry on Mondays at 18:00 and 18:30 with online booking. Tickets at alcazarsevilla.org.
Cathedral and Giralda: a standard ticket €14 (€13 online), includes the cathedral, the Giralda tower, and the Church of the Savior. Reduced €7. Free entry on Mondays from 16:30 to 18:00.
Guided combo tours with skip-the-line access: from €50 per person for both monuments.
Important about tickets. Tickets for the Alcázar sell out 2 to 3 weeks in advance during the high season (spring, summer). Book the Alcázar first, for a specific time, even before planning the rest of your day. Buy only on the official site alcazarsevilla.org. There are scam sites online with similar names that sell tickets for much higher prices.
Practical tips
Book the Alcázar in advance on the official website. This is the main priority for the whole trip.
Bring your passport. It is needed for entry to the monuments (it must match the document listed during booking). Copies and photos are not accepted.
Follow the cathedral dress code: covered shoulders, no flip-flops.
Leave at 7:00 AM to fit everything into one day.
Consider staying overnight in Santa Cruz if you want to see Seville without rushing.
On the way, stop in Ronda. This makes the route even more interesting.
Best time of year
Spring (especially April, during the orange tree bloom) and autumn are ideal. In summer, Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe, up to +45°C. Sightseeing is only possible in the morning and evening. Winter is mild and pleasant, and it is the best time for long walks.
Final takeaway
Seville requires a longer trip than other destinations, but it is a real capital of Andalusia that you should definitely see. The world’s largest Gothic cathedral, a palace with 700 years of history, neighborhoods of orange courtyards, and the birthplace of flamenco. The main condition for a successful trip is an early departure and a pre-booked Alcázar. And for those who can afford an overnight stay, Seville reveals itself even more fully in the evening and morning hours, when daytime tourists leave.
