Why Marbella is the capital of international education in Spain

International Schools in Marbella 2026: a complete guide for families

8 leading schools, 5 educational programs, 60+ nationalities in one class, and tuition from €7,000 to €20,500 per year.

Marbella is one of the strongest centers for international school education in continental Europe. This is not a marketing phrase. It is a structural reality that families moving here from London, Dubai, Zurich, and New York can see.

Three factors explain this phenomenon.

Concentration. More than 15 international schools with a proven reputation are located in Marbella and the nearby area. This is the highest density in Spain after Barcelona and Madrid.

History. The best schools were founded in the 1980s and 1990s. Over 35 to 40 years, they built a system tested by thousands of families from around the world.

Community. Marbella has a permanent international population of residents from 60+ countries. That means a class of 18 children can realistically include students from 12 different countries without artificial quota setting.

Result: for a family moving to Marbella, choosing a school is not “making do with what’s available.” It is a serious choice among several strong alternatives with different philosophies.

Top international schools

Below, we look at eight schools worth considering. Each one has its own character, location, and strengths.

Founded in 2004. Recognized by Forbes 2025 as one of the best schools in Spain. A community of more than 50 nationalities.

What stands out. An opportunity for children who may return to either the British or the Spanish university system. This is a rare advantage among international schools. Recognized by El Mundo as one of the top 100 international schools in Spain (only 20% of schools in Andalusia made this ranking).

Tuition: in the mid-range for international schools in Marbella (€8,000 to €20,000).

One of the most dynamically developing projects in the western part of the Costa del Sol. Good value for money, a modern campus.

Colegio San José

Location: Estepona. Programs: Spanish + IB Diploma in sixth form.

The oldest school in the region. A combination of a strong Spanish program with IB. A good choice for families focused on integrating into Spanish society with an international pathway.

St. Anthony's College

Location: Mijas (40 minutes from Marbella). Programs: British.

One option for families living in East Marbella or the eastern part of the coast. A more “down-to-earth” atmosphere compared to top schools in Marbella.

Learning programs: what to choose

Choosing an educational program is critical and depends on which country your child will apply to for university.

British program (A-Levels)

The most common path in international schools in Marbella. GCSE and A-Levels are well recognized in UK universities and accepted by most European and international educational institutions.

Suitable if: the family can return to the UK, the child plans to apply to British universities, and the family has a British academic background.

Schools with this program: Aloha College, Swans, EIC, Laude San Pedro, BISM.

International Baccalaureate (IB Diploma)

A globally recognized program, especially suitable for families who want to keep university options open across multiple countries.

Suitable if: the family is international, and the child may apply to the United States, Canada, continental Europe, or Asia. IB is valued worldwide.

Schools with this program: Aloha College, Swans, Colegio San José, Atalaya International School.

Spanish program (Bachillerato)

For those planning university in Spain or who want to give their child full Spanish cultural integration.

Suitable if: the family stays in Spain long-term, and the child plans to apply to university in Madrid, Barcelona, or other Spanish universities.

Schools: Laude San Pedro (dual), Colegio San José.

Dual pathways

The most flexible option: the child can follow both the British and Spanish programs at the same time, or choose between them at later stages. This strategy is especially popular with families who have not fully decided on long-term plans.

Schools with this option: Laude San Pedro, Swans (partially).

American program

Available only in a limited way in Marbella. Families focused on American universities often choose IB or the British program with additional SAT/ACT preparation.

Tuition costs and additional expenses

A realistic budget for a child in an international school in Marbella in 2026.

Primary school (6 to 11 years): €9,000 to €14,000 per year.

Secondary school (11 to 16 years): €12,000 to €17,000 per year.

Textbooks and materials: €200 to €400 per year.

Exams (GCSEs, A-Levels, IB): €300 to €700 per year during senior years.

Extracurricular activities: €500 to €2,000 per year depending on the choices.

Real annual family budget

For one child in a top school: €15,000 to €25,000 per year with all extras.

For two children: €25,000 to €45,000 per year.

For three children: €35,000 to €65,000 per year.

This is one of the biggest expense items for families moving to Marbella, after housing. Planning your budget 5 to 7 years ahead is critical.

How to apply: the enrollment process

Some practical advice from families who have gone through this process.

When to apply

Most schools use rolling applications, but popular years fill up months in advance. Ideally, apply 6 to 12 months before the planned start date.

Main deadlines. January for September intake in popular years. March through April for the midyear section (January intake in the feria year). If you are planning to move in autumn 2026 or spring 2027, apply now.

What you need for the application

Your child’s previous school reports (from 2 to 3 years).

Birth certificate and a copy of the passport.

A recommendation from the current school (especially for secondary).

English test results if the child is not from an English-speaking system.

Pre-assessment interview with the school (often online before arrival).

Proof of payment of the non refundable registration fee.

Tests and interviews

A standard procedure. English level testing (for secondary school). Review of past reports. Sometimes interviews with parents. EIC and Laude San Pedro clearly explain the process on their websites, which makes planning easier.

Visit the campus

A required step. Aloha and Swans actively recommend visiting before applying. This is not a formality. It is a real filter that helps you and the school understand mutual fit.

Public schools as an alternative

Free education is available to all Marbella residents with Padrón. Teaching is in Spanish. The quality of primary school is high.

When it works. If the child is under 8 years old (adapts quickly to the language). If the family stays for a long time and wants full cultural integration. If the budget is limited.

When it does not work. Senior years (it is hard to catch up with the Spanish curriculum). Families with a plan to return to an English-speaking system. Children with special educational needs.

Many families combine. They start with a public school for younger children and move to an international school for the later section period.

The main rule for choosing a school

Do not choose a school only based on rankings or price. Choose based on a combination of four factors.

The educational program must match your long-term university plans.

The location should reduce the school run to 15 to 20 minutes at most. A long commute affects your child’s and the family’s quality of life.

The school style should match your child’s personality. Aloha and EIC are more academically intensive. Laude and Swans are more balanced. The smaller BISM format is suitable for children who need more attention.

The community should match your family circle. Schools with similar fees can attract different demographics: look at parents at the open day, not only at students.

If all four factors align, the school becomes one of the best investments in Marbella, because the quality of education here is truly world-class.
